Intuitive Colorimetry and visual stress
Intuitive Colorimetry is a procedure that aims to reduce the symptoms of Meares-Irlen syndrome, also known as visual stress. Approximately 10% - 12% of the population is severely affected by Visual Stress and 20% to a lesser degree.
Symptoms include:
- movement of print
- blurring of print
- letters changing shape or size
- letters fading or becoming darker
- patterns appearing, sometimes described as “worms” or “rivers” running through print
- illusions of colour – blobs of colour on the page or colours surrounding letters or words
- rapid tiring
- headache or eyestrain

It was first suggested that my daughter might have dyslexia at the end of Year 5; when we took her to the opticians, we found that a pink-coloured overlay helped, and her primary school teacher adjusted the background of the white board to pink so the letters didn’t jump around for her. But when she went to secondary school there were other children in the class with visual stress who needed different colours, so changing the background of the white board was no longer an option. We went back to Kings Hill Opticians and she was tested with the Colorimetry machine, which created bespoke lenses for her out of three different tints: her glasses just look dark pink, but they are actually a mix of three different colours. My daughter loves her glasses – she says letters don’t dance around anymore and at school she is just improving and improving. She also sings for Kent and can follow the sheet music when she wears her glasses. She used to have headaches all the time before and they’ve gone now. In Year 5, she used to come home grumpy and headachy; now I’ve got my daughter back.
